Elk hunting was slightly tough, opening day I forgot my GPS and camera. My 1st year
hunting this area and at 12000 feet it was beautiful sunrise and view that made me
go, damn I forgot my camera!
One of the guys I was hunting with worked his way to me and told me to start walking
down the hill and pointed.  He told me I would run into his dad. After walking for 30
minutes I had no clue where I was, know wishing I had my GPS! I found a creek and a
rock to sit on until Al found me wanting to know what I was doing way over here!
Dennis seen me walking and never said a word to me and let me keep walking!
No elk. Sunday I was feeling crappy so I stayed lower and Dennis shot a nice cow
and 1 other guy got a bull calf. Monday still sick stayed in. Tuesday to the
hospital….pneumonia Dr. says no more hunting or I’ll be in the hospital.
Wed did some plumbing, Thursday went hunting our group shot 6 elk.
Who says elk hunting isn’t fun!! Still fighting the pneumonia though.Loved the warm
weather!

Time of Kill: opening day 3rd season
State: Colorado
County: Route
Location Details: 9200 feet above sea level up drag ass hill Elkhorn mountain
Kill Type: Elk

First time elk hunting was pretty good to me. Four of my dads friends and myself winched and pulled each others trucks up the mountain as far from everyone else as we could get. We set up camp the day before the opener of third season rifle in Route National Forest. The plan was for two of us would side hill around about a mile to the east, one would overlook the valley straight out from camp and Dad and I would climb Drag ass hill to the top. There is a reason they call it that too. We left and were nearly to the top and heard two shots almost at the same time from the side of the mountain. Dad and I finished the climb and set up to cover the ridge leading to the pass over the top and already could hear the cows calling to the calves. We both had bull only tags and could not beleave it when the group of elk had two legal bulls in the herd. Of course Dad did what dads do and gave me the
bigger of the two. I got caught out in the open and had to make my shot off hand at a hundred and thirty-five yards. Dads shot was about one seventy-five. My bull stumbled twenty yards and tipped over and dads bailed out and found a place to lay down a hundred yards away. After the pictures and hard work on our elk, we made the mile trek around the side of the mountain and packed out two more elk the other guys shot. We filled four tags the first half hour of the season and poor Mike never seen an elk the whole trip. He’s by no stretch the biggest elk but he is hanging on my wall and I wouldn’t trade him for nothing.
