Canada Black Bear Bow Kill

My First Bow Kill Ever!

Name: Eric Ludtke
Date of Kill: August 2005
Location: Ontario Canada
Kill Type: Black Bear
Season: Open

After only shooting a bow that my brother-in-law Kenny Guy gave me for a week, we headed north to attempt to harvest some big Canada bruins.  The first two nights we were there I was on filming duty for one of the hunters making a hunting video.  After the second night of filming and being told I move too much in the tree stand, I went hunting on my own.  I sat still as could be for the first two hours when I thought I heard a noise to the left of the tree.  I stared intensely into the forest trying to spot any movement, a bear walked from behind my stand and right to the bait.  My heart was pounding through my camo.  I lifted my bow up and began to draw it back when CRACK CRACK!  Both of my shoulders popped from not moving for two hours.  The bear turned and peered up at me in the tree stand.  After what seemed like an eternity the bear turned around and ran off.  Disappointed but extremely pumped from the encounter I sat on edge for the rest of the evening.  Day four another hunter, Charlie, came with me to film.  We were in the tree for maybe twenty-five minutes when the first bear came in.  He stopped ten yards from the bait in the thick underbrush and sat down to stare up at us in the tree.  Ten minutes later the bear took off, never giving me an opportunity to draw back.  I looked over at Charlie and he said don’t worry he’ll be back.  Sure enough about an hour later in comes the same bear, this time he comes straight to the bait.  After about five minutes of pigging out over the bait I got the chance to take a shot.  This time no shoulder noises just the sound of my arrow smoking the bear as he was quartering away…Wham!  The bear bites at the arrow and takes off running.  I look at Charlie and ask if was a good shot.  As he is telling me he probably wouldn’t have taken the shot we hear the bear let out the death moan.  “Dead bear” Charlie yells.  After several adrenaline induced high fives, we get down and walk to my trophy.  He ran just 15 yards from the bait and crashed.  It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.  My very first bow kill ever and the addiction began!
