  This was my first whitetail ever. The neighbor walked in at seven. There was three
deer, two came thirty yards. I shot the large doe and passed on the other small one.
Later dad kicked up that same deer and I shot it fifty yards in the very thick
sapplings.

  It was opening day my dad and i were sitting under a pine tree. we seen this doe
coming down the hill my heart was pounding so hard i did’nt think i could hold the
gun still.She came about 25 yards and i let one fly. I shot my first deer it was
awesome.

  My brother in law Damion Sadd talked me into going turkey hunting. I agreed to go
thinking “Big deal, it’s a big stupid bird.” Boy was I wrong. We got out of the
truck and hit the owl call. The timber lit up with Toms gobbling back. We went
towards one, found a tree to sit by and put up our little net blind in front of us.
We called and waited. Nothing. About 2 hours after we sat down, 6 hens came in about
25 yards behind us and actually sat down. We thought we were in the sweet spot.
Nothing. Finally, they got up and walked away. I was pretty frustrated so I told
Damion to hit the call. We heard some movement to our right. There were 2 toms
coming our way in full strut. They worked their way towards us. I told Damion I
would take the one on the right and on three we’d let them have it. I shot mine, he
went down, Damion missed but I think he was watching me instead of actually trying
to kill the other bird. Since this, I think turkey hunting is alot of fun. But I
haven’t been able to get back out in the woods because it’s a river bottom and has
been flooded the last 3 springs.

  Finally had the oppurtunity to hunt after returning from Afghanistan, me and my
buddy planned this trip for a long time so we hunted in Ft. Lewis. After conducting
an area recon, and saw only tracks I proceeded down to an area I originally wanted
to hunt when I spotted 2 does grazing in the open. Using the brush to cover my
movement at around 400 meters, I closed the gap to 300. Confirming they were does
through my binos I notice the does were constantly looking to the edge of the
woodline when I looked through my binos to see what they were looking at I saw
another deer figure approaching the does.Once I crept up to close the gap between me
and the approaching deer, I took another glance and saw his impressive rack, I was
now 200 meters from the trio, I aimed at the buck but I had a doe blocking my shot.
Once the doe moved I had a nice broad shot, I took the shot and the buck did a 360
degree turn and down he went.

John's Iowa Shotgun Buck

  Opening morning of the first weekend of shotgun hunting in Iowa had a different beginning than any other weekend of opening mornings of riffle hunting back home in the northwest corner of Minnesota.  On the way to the hunting land I realized I had  forgotten my bibs back at the shack(a.k.a. the hotel). it was a good thing we woke up and left early because after high-tailing it back to get my bibs, By the time I got to park I had 15 minutes before opening shooting time began. Long-story short I got ready and basically ran to my spot with about 2 minutes to spare before shooting was legal.
  Once first light began the deer were on the move due to the brisk but beautiful morning along with last night’s frost. Not to mention the hundreds of shots being fired by hunters in the area. Overall I seen about 14 deer that morning, where the other guys in our crew were seeing 20-50. At about 9:15am my feet were a little numb so I decided to stand up with the intentions of going back to the pickup in in a half hour or so if I hadn’t seen any more deer in that time. About 5 minutes later two does came running into the grass clearing with two bucks chasing them close behind. I immediately noticed the 8 ptr. due to the mass of his rack not to mention the other buck was a young basket 6. The bucks stopped about 50 yards and slightly quartering away from me. I took two shoots that seemed to hit nothing but air since the buck didn’t move. The buck began to run after the second shot, to the north away from me and I tried to relax and squeezed the trigger again with the buck dropping in its tracks. I hit it in the mid to low back in the spine. This was a tough 3-4 year old deer that just didn’t want to give up(Eric and Steve can attest to that). Also after Adam and I skinned  and quartered the deer today we relized it was actually hit 3 times. We determined that my second shot must have hit him high in the back just below the neck which caused him to start running.

  This is my first Iowa buck and it is no contest that this is my biggest buck of my young 8 year deer hunting career. I really want to thank Cary, Steve, Eric, Adam and all of the crew for a great weekend. The experiences from this weekend will never be forgotten. I appreciated all the help putting me in the right spot and especially the help dragging my buck the “country mile” uphill back to the pick-ups. Thanks again guys and I am looking forward to our next hunting trip(no matter where it is)!
