Kill Type: Turkey
Well I had wanted to go turkey hunting for awhile and I never could, so one day I asked my dads friend to take me. I had never been hunting in my life so I had no idea what I had to do to prepare. We started off by building a couple blinds in the area we were going to hunt. We scouted the area for tracks and found plenty we also saw that there was a big creek where we were hunting. We had heard that the turkey were on the other side of the creek at times and that they came over at the point where we were at. We had decided to take a boat out to the creek. It was a very and I mean very long walk with that boat on our shoulders. We finally got there and I was so relieved we got done. Then the day before we were going to hunt, me and the other kid I was going to hunt with got dropped off in a corn field near our blinds and we roosted the turkey. Finally the day came we were going to hunt, I felt so excited to finally be out. We arrived at about 6:15 in the morning and we silently walked through the forest, we settled in and started to hear the call. We were in our spots til around 9, we heard the turkey and saw them plenty off times but they were on the other side of the creek. We were hoping that that we could call them over to us but sadly they didn’t. We decided to take the boat and cross the creek. We walked up a ridge and we took our positions. The turkey has been in this area earlier but they were farther now. We started to call them and we got them to call back but they didn’t come. All of a sudden we hear one to the right of us on the other side of the ridge, we call and it finally came. Two of them get to the top of the ridge but all I can see is the top of there head so I can’t get a shot off. They both go right and I think that I lost them then one of them jumps on top of a log, I aim and fire. We run after it but it went nowhere , it was on the ground flapping its wings so I grabbed it. I had done it, I got my first tom!

I shot this with my new 20 gauge at 30 yds. My then boyfriend, now husband, called two big gobblers across a field right to us and he told me to shoot the one on the left, so I did. Well that one piled up and the other I watched run away with two beards flopping as he ran. None the less I am very happy with my first Turkey.

Season:Bow
Hunting 43 out of 48 days to open a season without seeing a shooter can wear on even the most patient of hunters…but that is what I did to bag my first buck with a bow. Cary Brown(MMK co-creator) filled his any sex bow tag his first night in the stand so we decided to try and get my first Monster Kill on film. We set up a few filming stands at some of our hot spots and began our journey. It seemed like we had seen hundreds of deer but nothing to shoot at. Once November rolled around the action started to heat up. Cary and I hunted one particular set we call the “Crossroads”. Deer after deer, doe after doe, spike after spike, fork after fork you get my point. Every deer that got within bow range needed three or four years before I would draw on them. We had seen my buck a few times, either on trail pics or cruising at a safe distance. We also had a couple years of photos on him so we new that we was definately a buck that had reached his full potential and he made our management hit list. About 7a.m. on November 16th I told Cary I was going to shoot my buck in an hour. He just chuckled knowing that we had been hunting for about 22 straight days at that point with no shooters getting close. At 7:52 Cary bumps me and says “BUCK, BUCK, BUCK!” I stand up and see my buck making his way to a rub right under my treestand. When he gets about 12 yards away, I hit him with a vocal stop so loud from excitement I stopped deer two counties away! I put my pin on him and squeezed my release. “Let it fly and watch him die” runs through my head. My buck runs about 45 yards, wobbles and crashes over, all on video!!! Cary turns the camera on me and I just started laughing thinking about all the mornings, afternoons and sundowns we sat in those stands waiting for that moment. My first buck with a bow was down, and I had my first Midwest Monster Kill!

My First Bow Kill Ever!

Date of Kill: August 2005
Location: Ontario Canada
Kill Type: Black Bear
Season: Open
After only shooting a bow that my brother-in-law Kenny Guy gave me for a week, we headed north to attempt to harvest some big Canada bruins. The first two nights we were there I was on filming duty for one of the hunters making a hunting video. After the second night of filming and being told I move too much in the tree stand, I went hunting on my own. I sat still as could be for the first two hours when I thought I heard a noise to the left of the tree. I stared intensely into the forest trying to spot any movement, a bear walked from behind my stand and right to the bait. My heart was pounding through my camo. I lifted my bow up and began to draw it back when CRACK CRACK! Both of my shoulders popped from not moving for two hours. The bear turned and peered up at me in the tree stand. After what seemed like an eternity the bear turned around and ran off. Disappointed but extremely pumped from the encounter I sat on edge for the rest of the evening. Day four another hunter, Charlie, came with me to film. We were in the tree for maybe twenty-five minutes when the first bear came in. He stopped ten yards from the bait in the thick underbrush and sat down to stare up at us in the tree. Ten minutes later the bear took off, never giving me an opportunity to draw back. I looked over at Charlie and he said don’t worry he’ll be back. Sure enough about an hour later in comes the same bear, this time he comes straight to the bait. After about five minutes of pigging out over the bait I got the chance to take a shot. This time no shoulder noises just the sound of my arrow smoking the bear as he was quartering away…Wham! The bear bites at the arrow and takes off running. I look at Charlie and ask if was a good shot. As he is telling me he probably wouldn’t have taken the shot we hear the bear let out the death moan. “Dead bear” Charlie yells. After several adrenaline induced high fives, we get down and walk to my trophy. He ran just 15 yards from the bait and crashed. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. My very first bow kill ever and the addiction began!
