Thanksgiving in April
Name: Charlie Arteaga
Date:April 4, 2009
Location:Illinois
Kill Type: Turkey
Well I had wanted to go turkey hunting for awhile and I never could, so one day I asked my dads friend to take me. I had never been hunting in my life so I had no idea what I had to do to prepare. We started off by building a couple blinds in the area we were going to hunt. We scouted the area for tracks and found plenty we also saw that there was a big creek where we were hunting. We had heard that the turkey were on the other side of the creek at times and that they came over at the point where we were at. We had decided to take a boat out to the creek. It was a very and I mean very long walk with that boat on our shoulders. We finally got there and I was so relieved we got done. Then the day before we were going to hunt, me and the other kid I was going to hunt with got dropped off in a corn field near our blinds and we roosted the turkey. Finally the day came we were going to hunt, I felt so excited to finally be out. We arrived at about 6:15 in the morning and we silently walked through the forest, we settled in and started to hear the call. We were in our spots til around 9, we heard the turkey and saw them plenty off times but they were on the other side of the creek. We were hoping that that we could call them over to us but sadly they didn’t. We decided to take the boat and cross the creek. We walked up a ridge and we took our positions. The turkey has been in this area earlier but they were farther now. We started to call them and we got them to call back but they didn’t come. All of a sudden we hear one to the right of us on the other side of the ridge, we call and it finally came. Two of them get to the top of the ridge but all I can see is the top of there head so I can’t get a shot off. They both go right and I think that I lost them then one of them jumps on top of a log, I aim and fire. We run after it but it went nowhere , it was on the ground flapping its wings so I grabbed it. I had done it, I got my first tom!
