I was lucky enough to draw a 3rd season Illinois spring turkey tag for the 2012
season. I took two weeks vacation so I could hunt the whole season if needed.
Opening day for me was sunny and fairly cold for april. I had some gobbles often
and early but sounded like it was way off in the distance, then around 615am two
toms came out and went to check a lone hen so after 3 hours off no action I picked
up my double bull blind and moved it closer towards where the birds came out of
the timber.Monday morning was foggy and warm. Walking to the blind I had very little
confidence I would see any birds on such a nasty morning. As I was climbing in my
blind I could hear two toms goobling like crazy fairly close to me and could hear
a few others across the road.   They flew off the roost around 600am and didnt gobble
much after that then I heard a gobble soI turned and looked to the north and here stood
two toms. I made a couple of calls to make sure they saw my decoys and here they come
running. They closed the gap to about 15 yards and I took the first good shot.

For the record it was probably 22 lbs with a 10.5 inch beard and 1 1/8th spurs.

I was with my niece Jennie who was 12 at the time and was the first time hunting this spot, first time on lease and we decided to hunt along the break, which was the only hardwoods and a little foodplot which was produce very much and the rest was all pines. It was opening day of muzzleloader and i had to put up two treestands. So we got into treestands about 8am and in about 20 minutes I caught a glance of something coming from the 4 wheeler trail and pines. Looking into the sun I couldnt see how big it was, which we had an 8pt or better  limit, so I shot and it went 30yds off the break and it was this 210 lb. 8 pointer with one of his brow tines broke off and he was 18 1/2 inches wide.

Bob's Monster Kill

Unfortunately I lost this deer for a little over a month due to the terrain and an antsy trigger finger on the release. He crossed a creek on me twice and we lost blood. I never gave up looking for him because I knew it was a kill shot and he couldn’t be to far from where we lost blood. Found him crawled up under a down tree top where I had drug out another smaller buck during the 9 day gun hunt within 10 yards of him! 16 scoreable points with one being just shy of an inch making him 17 points. Waiting on a score and age of the buck. Get wet guys thats where the big boys hide!

Rut was on and I had the choice of 2 bucks and this one showed me a perfect broad side 40 yard shot that I couldn’t pass up. Todd's Buck

It was Monday Morning and i really wanted to be in my treestand because the rut was in full swing in Wisconsin. I wasn’t able to hunt because the farmer whos land I hunt had asked me to help spread manure on his field. As I was driving the tractor on a trail through a patch woods, I happened to see a doe only 20 yards of the tractor trail with a nice tall rack buck at her side. All I could do was stare in awe as they just watched me drive by. Hoping he would stick around I returned to a Stand close to the area where I saw the buck. After passing up two small bucks I decided to use my grunt call. One sequence of grunts and I had a shooter buck come charging out of the swamp! He walked 10 yards in front of me and I let the arrow fly. I didnt get a good look at him but after a short trailing job I found my buck and it just happened to be that buck I had seen that morning while I was on the tractor. He was a massive 7pt with a 16.5 inch spread and dressed out at 200lbs. What an awesome day in the woods!

Well guys, I got rained out at work, so I came home. Just so happens, It was my womans birthday. I asked her nicely if I could go out hunting? She said it was fine as long as I killed a big one. So I took advantage of the situation. When it’s rainy and windy I put the stalk down! So I start my stalk face in the wind, kick up 3 doe, as they take off I see big boy turn his head as the doe run by him. So now im in the creep mode. Everytime the wind would start to blow hard, I would take a few steps towards him. I get 20 yards from him and whistle at him, he starts to look around while laying down. So now I start to freak out thinking he’s going to run. I got everything running through my head, so now I got to make it happen. I draw back, say get up, say it again, finally the third time I said it, he stood up giving me a perfect broadside shot. I smoked him! He ran 45 yards and dropped. I instantly called the little woman to tell her the good news. All I can say, is if it’s raining and windy get down wind and go for it.
